This despatch deals with point no. 2 raised in ∙10006. As foreshadowed in the Minutes on that paper

the principal difficulty with regard to the sale of good-will and trademarks is that a larger part of the value of these items exists in respect of Treaty ports in China, and this part of their value cannot be transferred. The only point in selling ood-will

which cannot by this date have any value so far as

Hong Kong is concerned, would be to make possible sale of trademarks, but having regard to the viewf expressed by the Governor it seems to me plain that the best course is not to sell either good-will or trade-

marks but to continue the policy decided on in 47585/14

This being so we need not reply to this despach at present, see last paragraph.

With regard to 10006 we are waiting to deal with the points 3,4, and 5 for a reply from the board
